Cupcake Cabaret: A Brief History of “Bad” Women
Welcome to Cupcake Cabaret, our 2012 Capital Fringe Festival entry, which will be produced in association with The Soundry!
CUPCAKE CABARET: A BRIEF HISTORY OF “BAD” WOMEN
Capital Fringe Festival is a 3-week-long performing arts festival that encourages and supports experimental creative works. This year the festival runs from July 12 – 29.
The proposal for Cupcake Cabaret described the show as involving dance, film, and visual art. The show will be built around three social “themes” that reflect the feelings from different historic points in the development of burlesque in this country, and how those themes relate to us today. NOTE: we have since been assigned a venue where there is no projector or screen, so this show is being modified from it’s original proposal.
Sherry Somebody, one day shy of her 50th birthday and recently/unexpectedly dumped by her husband, she is brought by her friends to a slocal club that advertises a weekly “sewing circle.” They have barely introduced themselvrs when they realize that all the members of the group are sewing pasties; they are burlesque performers! Feeling out of place, Sherry casts about for a polite way to leave, but her friends hold her back and she is quickly captivated by the stories of these women as each of them in turn offer her understanding, insight, and inspiration through words and through dance.
